SAN DIEGO, CA (Feb. 1, 2008) – Bicycle
Retailer and Industry News recently handed out its BRAINy awards with a
first-ever emphasis on companies making a
concerted effort to go green.
“We want to encourage companies to consider
taking small steps toward lessening their
environmental footprint,” said Megan
Tompkins, the magazine’s editor.
The awards were announced Jan. 19 at the
Bicycle Leadership Conference in San Diego.
Winners were selected based on an online
self-nominating survey conducted by an
independent research group.
Companies were selected for participating in
a range of environmentally friendly
initiatives such as offering incentives to
employees who use alternative means of
transportation to get to work, offsetting
carbon emissions, implementing green
shipping practices and using recycled paper.
Winners in the manufacturer’s category for
large, mid-size and small companies were
Specialized, Thule and Pedro’s USA,
respectively.
Pedro’s USA has a history of creating green
products, most recently with its GO line of
biodegradable chain lubes. GO is
canola-based and made from renewable
resources.
“We are obviously thrilled to be recognized
for our efforts in sustainability, but it’s
really just the beginning. We, all of us in
cycling, have a long way to go. We can do
better. We have to” muttered Christopher
Zigmont, General Manager at Pedro’s.
“Pedro’s USA was recognized
for its commitment to creating green
products and educating consumers about
sustainability through its web site and
product marketing,” Tompkins said.
